Unless the card comes pre-tested, then you should try it in your phone.

Ideally, it should be recognized correctly when inserted. Place it in the card slot, and go to the [Extras] menu, and either open the [Memory] app, or the [File Mngr] app.

If [Memory] app, the capacity should be listed, and available memory listed (and should -almost- match the capacity).

If [File Mngr] app, select the drive letter E: (this is always the external MMC card), and from the [Options] menu select [Memory Functions/Memory State].
This should give a list of the total capacity on the phone, and free memory.

There is a possibility that the card will not work "out of the box" with your SX1. This is when the file system format on the card is non-compatible with your phone (a memory card can use most file system formatting standards from NTFS, FAT32, FAT (16), and others). SX1 needs a standard FAT formatted card to work.

In these cases, a card could be formatted by the phone, but this is not always possible (the SX1 may just reject it, and say it is corrupt or invalid). Then a PC card reader could be used to format it. But, i doubt the store will be happy for you to try formatting it!
