HOWTO: Installing the OGG Music player and How it works with your mobile:

Requirements:

Symbian Series 60 Mobile Phone ( such as Nokia n-Gage / Nokia n-Gage QD / Nokia 6600 / Siemens SX1 / Nokia 7610 / Nokia 3650 )

Big MMC memory card (or RS-MMC for Nokia 7610)

Ogg Vorbis is an audio compression format similar to the mp3 audio format. But the difference is that the compressed files are approximately half the size of mp3 files. For this reason the format has proved very popular for mobile phones after an Ogg player was written for symbian (firstly for P800 and Symbian UIQ).

It means that you can store even more music tracks on your MobyMemory card!

For example a file encoded with 64kbit/sec gives approximately the same level of audio quality as a 128kbit/sec mp3 file. The ogg format is a free (open source) format, which means nobody has to pay for it, it's a freeware. Everything that you need to convert files to OGG files is here.

Now where you can find the Symbian Series 60 OGG Player, you can download it from here: http://symbianoggplay.sourceforge.net/

Table shows the capabilities of each phone with the Ogg Music player:

There are two new versions build for Series 60 :

Version 1.0: ogg player build for: Siemens SX-1, Nokia n-gage, Nokia N-gage QD, Nokia 3650, Nokia 6600. Bit rate for all those phones is 16 000 Hz, Mono except N-gage and SX1 which can play 44 000,Stereo.

Version 1.5.1: ogg player build for: Nokia 7610, Nokia 6600, and Nokia 6620.

Lets install the Version 1.0 for series 60.

The Download file from the above link will be a .ZIP or .SIS file (SIS file is a Symbian installation file). If it is a ZIP file you have to unpack it and use the extracted .SIS file for your phone.

Copy that .sis file onto the root folder of your memory card.

Place your memory card back in your mobile and switch on.

Now you should be able to install the .sis file by going to your Manager application in Tools menu.

Install OGG Player, after installation you have a new application in your phones menu, see bottom:

Press on it and start with Player.

Ogg Files:

You can make .ogg files from your existing CDs or existing MP3s with a tool like dBpowerAMP.

You just have to make sure you install the Ogg Vorbis codec from their website after you have setup the dBpowerAMP Music Converter:

http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-ogg.htm

Another option to this would be CD ripping with a freeware tool like CD'N'Go : http://www.cdngo.com

And getting the Ogg Encoder (OggEnc) from : http://www.vorbis.com/download.psp

Remember using the original source CD for encoding will always give a better result than converting a digital music file (of lossy format like Mp3, aac, wma etc..).

Making a playlist:

If you have got a USB Card Reader than it is very simple. Connect up your memory card to your PC with the card reader. Make sub-folders and name them, and copy your newly made .OGG files into the folders.Than put your memory card back in your phone and start the Ogg player.

You will see above 6 Folders, which are the different category types for searching your tracks: by Title, by albums, by artists, by genres, by subfolders and by file(name).

Now all the folders are empty to start, and so you have to press OPTIONS, and select ' Find new files '

The player will open a window keeping you updated as it scans all the directories in your phone  memory and memory card.

Now your player will have a complete track list of all the OGG files it can find. You can now choose to play your tracks by the different category types mentioned earlier.

The Ogg Player itself is a really simple player: you have displayed just the length of the song and sound volume.

The Ogg player is open-source programming at its best, giving us all a great way to squeeze more of our music onto our symbian mobiles..

Remember to donate if you find it useful at http://symbianoggplay.sourceforge.net

Regarding playlists, your section does not describe making one, you just list how to add all the available tunes on your phone.

In the version you trialled there is no support for them.

Only Ogg player version 1.6.5, which is an unstable beta version (although nothing's crashed so far) has the extra option of playlists which recognises those made by Media PLayer or Nokia Audio Manager or by the phone itself using the clumsy interface of Real Player.

This is my experience on a 6630.

The user interface is minimal as you described, but hotkeys can be defined for all the transport controls, volume and moving up and down your playlist.

It's my preferred player of choice - Ultra MP3 player by Lonely Cat, while being small and compact and packing a lot of detail on the screen does not support playlists and tends to skip files too.

Cheers,

Chris
