HOWTO: Install and use the Nokia Multimedia Converter 2.0

Requirements: Windows XP SP1/Windows 2000 SP3

(For Nokia 6230, Nokia n-Gage, Nokia n-Gage QD, Nokia 3650, Nokia 6600, and Nokia 7610)

Nokia Multimedia Converter 2.0 converts video files to a 128 kbps video bit stream, which is compatible with Nokia's range of "smarter" mobiles .It is an application for converting different types of multimedia files ( AVI, WAW, MPEG, and MP3) into 3GPP/ AMR or 3GPP/ WR AMR. The 3GPP format video can be played on a PC via the Nokia PC Suite, or more likely, on your Nokia mobile phone: including the Nokia 6230, Nokia n-Gage, Nokia n-Gage QD, Nokia 3650, Nokia 6600, and Nokia 7610. The .3GP (or also known as 3GPP format),  is part of the MP4 Video encoding standard that is the replacement for the older MPEG2 standard.

Your installation is now complete.

We can start to discuss the settings for converting video files.

For Nokia 6230 Owners:

Video- sub-QCIF(128 x 96)/ Bit rate 64kbps

Audio- AMR

For Nokia 7610/Nokia 6600 Owners:

Video- QCIF(176 x 144)/ Bit rate 128kbps

Audio- WB AMR

For Nokia n-gage/Nokia n-gage QD/ 3650 Owners:

Video- QCIF(176 x 144)/ Bit rate 128kbps

Audio- AMR

Audio Sampling rate is converted to either 8 kHz (AMR) or 16Khz (WB-AMR - wide band AMR).

Only the latest symbian Nokia phones like the Nokia 6600, and the Nokia 7610 can play wide-band AMR.

Video image size can be QCIF for the bigger smartphones (like n-Gage, 6600, 7610 etc) or sub- QCIF in 128kbps Bit rate for the Nokia 6230.

The maximum frame rate for all the phones is 15fps (frames per second).

To select your video file, just select [File] | [Open]  and go and browse for your video file. It can be any of the following video formats:

  • .AVI
  • .MPG (.MPEG)
  • .NIM ("Nokia Interleaved Multimedia" (NIM) format:- from Nokia Communicator days)

Playing the new video file for your Nokia mobile

This is the official way to get existing digital video onto your Nokia mobile phone.

Other applications that let you do a similar thing include:

  • Apple QuickTime (can produce .3GP files as well. Remember to stay within the setting limitations above.)
  • EO Video :  It is a handy utility for converting to .AVI from .RM (Real Media format) , check it out at: http://www.eo-video.com/. Of course, one you have a .AVI file, you will need to use Nokia Multimedia converter or Quicktime to turn into a .3GP file format.

Having converted your video file, you can check the output by pressing the Play button within Nokia Multimedia Converter.

If you are happy with the video, now you can transfer the video file to your MobyMemory card, by either using a USB card reader (and copying&pasting in Windows Explorer), or using your supplied Nokia USB cable (or alternativley bluetooth adapter) and pasting into the Nokia Phone browser icon within Windows Explorer.

From your mobile menu, navigate to the video file using the Gallery (or File Manager) application (depending which mobile you have), and select Open.

Now you can take video on the move..

Tim,

the same settings as above should work fine as the Nokia 3230 is a very similar spec phone to the Nokia 7610, with a Q-CIF resolution screen (176 x 144 pixel). Give the same as above for 7610 a try, and tell us how you get on.

Cheers

Hey again

I'm having trouble converting things. I don't suppose you'll be able to help, but I get an error before it gets to 2% saying;

---------------------------------------------
MMConverter.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x028d6773" referenced memory at "0x0392ee3e". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

OK CANCEL
----------------------------------------------

I managed to convert a couple of files but now it does this everytime.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Tim
