Are you SURE you followed step 5 above? I transferred a load of MP3's onto my 2GB MMC using my card reader then put the card back in the phone and I can see all my MP3's in the Nokia 6230i section of music manager (even tho they were transferred by card reader)

Also, I too use MobiMB to create playlists as it's much faster than Nokia Music Manager (especially with bigger cards), but you did specifically ask how to do it using Music Manager in the latest version of PC Suite v6.8.

this is ok, but i use the usb reader to fill up 1 gb of music because is much faster and then i the music manager don`t see the tracks alredy on the card and therefore can`t make playlists.

I recommend MobiMB Mobile Media Browser as is MUCH, MUCH faster than pc suite and works more reliably

I've had a quick play around and am starting to get used to the new Audio Manager. It has a few settings that take a bit of getting used to, but hopefully this will get you all started.

1. Connect your phone and then start Nokia Music Manager

2. Click Options -> Settings

3. At the bottom 'Location Of My COllection' click the Browse button and point it to where you save your MP3's on the PC.

4. Click the Nokia 6230i tab

5. In the 'Path to music files on the Nokia 6230i' section click the browse button and point it to where you save your music on your 6230i. Choose the top most folder (I use E:\) as Music Manager will scan the sub-folders.

6. If you wish, set the 'Memory Settings For Random Transfer'. This sets how much of your phone to fill with a randomly chosen selection of music (if you wish to use this function)

7. Click OK.

8. Nokia Music Manager will now load your PC MP3's into the MY Collection section and your phone files into the Nokia 6230i section.

Transferring a track from PC to Nokia

Click on a track(s) in My Collection and click the icon in the very bottom right of the window (picture of phone with arrow pointing towards it) to copy to your phone.

The file is placed in the directory you chose but with a sub dir for Artist and ALbum

Creating A Playlist Of Tracks On Your Phone

Click to select one or more of the tracks in the Nokia 6230i section then click the icon in the very bottom left of the window (picture of a musical note on a clipboard with a + sign) to create a new playlist.

It will be automatically named, eg Playlist1. Click to select it, then right click and choose rename to give it a better name.

I'll try to do better instructions when I get a chance, but for now use the first section to transfer your tracks, and the second section to create a playlist of your tracks AFTER you have copied them onto your phone.

anyone tried the new version 6.8 oc pc suite.?
how are we supposed to make playlists with this version?.

in help it says that you have to upload the mp3`s through pc suite in order to be able to make playlists, but this way it will take forever for 1 gb mmc or bigger, plus that we can`t use our readers.

so with much joy i downgraded the pc suite to vers 6.6

hello all. very new to musical genius of the 6230 and computers for that matter. So this is probably a very simple problem:

Downloaded nam 6.5

pc recieved my .aac files through bluetooth

made a new playlist and added the selected songs

Problem.....how do i get the new playlist back into my phone?

emmanuel mentioned 'reebooting' but that just noise to me........please help!

I've had no consistent joy making playlists.

Sometimes it will do it fine but most often it will hang. Sometimes just going away for a while, 10 mins or more while it loads a big playlist, will eventually let it load even though windows says it's not responding !

Trouble I've also found is that if you move a mp3 file or delete it, the phone gives it as an invalid playlist file.

I've given up now and just put all my files in the root directory of the card.

Copy ( don't move) all your music files that you want on your card into a temp directory. Highlight them all and rename them as 1.mp3 or something. They will all be renamed as 1 (2).mp3 1 (3).mp3 etc.

Now copy the all your files to the memory card and because they have short names you will not be restricted to only 125 files.

What about knowing which track is which I hear you say! Luckily the phone reads the MP3 file info . not the file name so it will still have the correct names! If any don't have a name, just edit the file info on the computer to add the name.

Hi guys, im also having a problem with playlists on my 6230, ive been able to successfully do it sometimes and then for some reason it wont work at all. The problem i have is when i load up the music transfer prog and click on the playlists folder the program hangs, every other program works with it allowing my to transfer applications or images its just the playlists folder, when in the music transfer prog i can click on the other folders in my phone and see the mp3s etc but soon as click on playlist the thing crashes, im doing this over infra red and have latest nam version,

If anybody has any suggestions as to what the prob is I would be most grateful

It appears that phones with older firmware dont work with the newer versions (after 6.2) of Nokia PC suite, they create wrong playlist as mentioned above.

I actually use PC suite 6.41 but with an older version of Audio manager (4.0).

I managed to get the playlist onto my phone. I used version 6.4 suite and hey presto! I did however have to transfer the whole album with the playlist to get it working. Dont mind tho!

Hi,

(1). The only working version is 6.2. (IMHO).
Please make a clean install if you have installed recent version.

(2). In the or in NAM delete all existing playlist.

(3). Rename your MMC CARD using your phone

(4). Connect your phone [use the PHONE SELECTOR. To access it, right click on the tray icon of >>NOKIA PC SYNC<< (circle arrows)]

(5). Using your card reader, send your MP3 files on your MMC Card, put them all in sub-folders, don't put them on the root sector of card.

(6). Use NAM to create & download to phone your Playlist as shown on the tutorial of Mobymemory

(7). Use NAM : select Playslist Folder, then select one Playlist, then right click, then ADD, select songs and [OK]

(8). Close NAM & reboot Phone

Hey people,

I'm having a real nightmare with this playlist thing for the 6230.

Ive tried 4 different versions of Nokia PC suite and all had different problems.

Version 6.1 - doesnt recognise my phone is connected!

Version 6.2 - same problem as above!

Version 6.4 - Program freezes when I click on playlist while making my 2nd playlist!

Version 5.8 - I don't have a clue how to make a playlist since it is different!

I've got a 1Gb memory card and i'm using windows XP with service pack 2. Im also using a USB DKU-2 cable(installed fine).

Anybody help me get playlists on my phone? please!

Playlists instructions are done in music manager and instructions are covered earlier.

You can't do it on the phone. You need to do it with the phone connected to the PC though and the card in the phone.

It's a pain.

Plus, if the playlist is really big it takes forever to come up if you're using bluetooth , so long you might think it's frozen! Wait longer!!

Yesterday i got my 256, good service, good price, good product.
I copied a lot of songs from my Card Reader and played from Nokia 6230
but I could not create Playlist within the phone.

Is there any way i can create playlist within the phone

I will try today using my laptop and I do not need to copy the songs as I already have songs in the phone. I will ask for help if i will need.

Got it working eventually. Just uninstalled PC Suite 6.1, installed 5.8 (still didn't work), uninstalled 5.8, installed 6.4, worked once but crashed, uninstalled 6.4, installed 6.2, works fine now! Nightmare!

Must be a prob with the software somewhere depending on things like operating system, firmware version, memory card etc..

I have the same problem as this. I can copy the new playlist over, I can see the MMC and all the folders and tracks on it. When I click "Add" on the playlist, all i can see is the tracks on the phone memory, not the tracks on the MMC.

I have formatted the MMC to FAT.

I have renamed the MMC (as some people think this makes a difference).

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP THIS IS DRIVING ME MAD!!

no, All tracks is the default playlist which is compiled with a scan of the root folder of your MMC, and phone memory. (proviso: unless this has changed in very latest firmware)

Hi, I'm not sure if I have a corrupted playlists or something on my 6230. When I click on playlists in audio manager it just goes to the hourglass symbol and stays like that until it comes up as not responding.

Is there anyway of deleting playlists already on the phone?

I've tried with another 6230 and that works fine.

If you make playlists for each of the folders/albums, does 'all tracks' pick up all the tracks in all the playlists?

I was having the same sort of problems until assisted in another thread. The version of Nokia Audio Manager in Nokia Suite 6.3 doesn't deal properly with playlists. Suggest you do what I did and downgrade to Nokia Suite 6.1 (I believe Nokia Suite 6.2 also works but haven't tested this).

This worked for me.

I filled up a 1GB card with music, and managed to create one playlist using the method in your excellent example. However, I tried to make some more, and I can see them using "music player" on the phone, but when I try and select any except the first one I created, the phone says "Invalid track list". I also find that in Audio Manager (version 6.3.14) now when I click on the phone "Playlist" under card A, the program freezes and I have to kill it.

I seems like somehow the card A is corrupted ? Any ideas what I should do ?
First of all I was connecting over bluetooth, and now over USB but I get the same problem with both.

Thanks MrMister. I have MobiMB 2.2 and I do use it to create Playlists. However users on another Nokia 6230 Forum I use do not have this software. Plus it seems a bit wrong that Nokia's own software does not work with their own product.

#EXTINF:-1,Float

instead of 'Gallery\256MB' there should be 'B:\'

I have tried Mobi MB, it costs about 17 Poung, but the app is very easy to use very fast, and in my opinion does everything (content managin, Vreate Playlist) better than the PC-Suite.

Has anyone tried this with Nokia Audio Manager 4.1 (part of PC Suite 6.3)

I've downloaded it and the playlists are no longer created correctly. When you load them on the phone it says "Invalid Track List"

I transferred the playlist it created from the phone to the PC and you can see the differences as follows:

Working Playlist (NAM 4.0 / MobiMB 2.2):

Have you reformatted the card externally?
If you have, is it formatted in FAT and not FAT32? Windows will show a card is formatted in FAT32 by default, best check. If you have checked already then sorry.

I dont think thats the problem. Becouse i can see my mmc card in nokia audio manager, it is the folder witch is called "minnekort" on the picture above. I can also transfer mp3 files to the mmc-card in aduio manager. The mmc-card only have 32mb memory and it is the card that came with the mobilephone.. anything to do with that ?

Do you have any further suggestion ?

does your mmc card appear under the Nokia 6230 icon in Nokia Audio Manager.? IF not, then i think your phone is struggling to recognize the card. Sometimes to fix this, you can rename the memory card from within the phone. (don;t format, just rename).

When it is recognized properly, the MMC card should appear with the name you have assigned it, under the phone icon in Nokia Audio Manager..

Once you can see the icon for your MMC card, then you can just expand it to see the tracks on the card.

I have a MMC card reader but nothing to connect my PC to my phone. I therefore created the playlist .M3U file on my PC with Nokia Audio Manager. I then edited is file with Notepad and changed the drive letter referenced to B: and saved it to the MMC card. I then put the MMC card back into the phone and transferred the playlist file from the MMC card to the phone's \Playlist folder.

Problem is that the phone does recognise the format of the Playlist file.

Any ideas why?

Is it that an .M3U file is coirrupted by saving with Notepad? Could it be that the filename is xxx.M3U?

HOWTO: Use Nokia Audio Manager to make playlists on your MMC

For this guide we used:

Windows XP Desktop PC / Nokia DKU-2 USB Cable / Nokia 6230 / Nokia PC Suite 6.2 / MobyMemory 1Gb MMC memory card

Nokia Audio Manager (NAM) is part of the Nokia PC Suite. Installation of which is discussed in another HOWTO guide:

HOWTO: Install Nokia PC Suite and Connect your mobile phone

NAM is the official way to get your music tracks onto your MMC, and/or to create playlists to reference those tracks. The reason playlists are useful (other than to classify the tracks you wish to play into different categories) is because with the Nokia 6230, all tracks have to be on the root folder of your MMC card if you want the music player to find them. But, because of filesystem limitations with the FAT filesystem (see discussed here: Max no. of files in root folder of Memory cards, putting music files (.aac or .mp3) in sub-folders gets around this limitation.

So, it is important to know how to reference music tracks that are stored in sub-folders of your MobyMemory MMC card.

The quickest way to get those tracks onto your 512mb or 1Gb MMC is through using a USB2 memory card reader connected to your PC. Having done this, replace your MMC into your Nokia mobile, and connect your mobile to the PC (through USB DKU-2 cable, or infra-red or bluetooth etc..) For this guide, i will make a playlist for my Black Eyed Peas-Elephunk CD which i ripped with dbPOWERAMP onto my PC (as MP3) and then transferred to my memory card via one of our USB2 12-in-1 card readers.

Now you are ready to open up the Nokia Audio Manager application.

When it opens up, make sure that the Phone segment of the app (lower half) has your mobile listed in it. (If your phone is not listed properly, then you will need to verify your connection is working correctly; see this article: HOWTO: Install Nokia PC Suite & Connect your mobile

Next step is to create a new (empty) playlist in the music studio section. Do this by right-clicking on the empty plalist section of the music studio (as below).

Select [Create New Playlist] from the menu options, and name you new playlist file (*.m3u) and press Save..

Now you should your new playlist listed.. In order to get it from the PC Music Studio to you mobile, you need to drag & drop the playlist file to the playlist section in the Phone segment (as below).

Your playlist file should now appear in the [Playlist] folder of the A: drive in your phone. Click on the playlist folder to check it is there.

Now, to add your music files into the playlist file, right-click on it and select [Add] from the menu.

Now all the music files on your MMC should appear in the pop-up list so you can select the ones you want to select for this playlist. Press OK to confirm the list of tracks.

That's it. You now know how to create playlists to reference your music files in sub-folders of your MMC card.

We will look at an alternative product for making playlists (and other things like managing images, tones, etc) namely, MobiMB in a later article.
