unlocking sharp gx30 is easy. plenty of webs do it for a small fee. allows you to use gx-30 on other networks - i transferred to O2 from Vodafone and it took a couple of hours to buy, receive email and perform. all you need is the handset IMEI (just type *#06# and it will display).

handy instruction pack i received from provider also detailed how to update settings to log onto O2 ISP for GPRS/WAP...etc

i got stuck trying to play tracks from my memory card by getting at them via mystuff - sounds. couldn't work out why the tracks only played one at a time.

solution: you have to open the MP3 Player thro the apps menu, which will pull up the entire playlist!

apparently you can't add new apps to this handset like I used to with my n-gage as it is not a smartphone...boohoo.

handset manager file size limit using infra-red transfer to pc

there is a file-size limit on file-size tranfers using the supplied gx30 Handset Manager software (100kb). therefore only useful for contacts and Outlook sync.

I don't think you can get access to memory card using the software either - have to use bluetooth or mem card reader connected to pc...anyone know how to get at card thro handset manager

need handset code to unlock handset from vodafone and when formatting phone. Default code is "0000" and it worked for me on 512mb card...

Has anyone got a gx-30 and tried the new camera? i hear it's good, but is it much different than any other phone-cams?

I've got an n-gage and am thinking of cashing in and getting a cam-phone (nokia 6230 or gx-30 currently). any issues with any of these? is transferral of cards between different-make phones a problem?

Don't have to format 512mb memory card when inserted new into gx-30. handset recognises it instantly so saves hassle of formatting and re-transferring old contents back onto card.

NB.

When we inserted the card for the first time, the phone said it did not like the card and that it needed formatting. This was strange because it was originally a FAT format, which is compatible with all mobiles (so we thought).

After using the onboard format function :

Under [Main menu / Settings / Memory Card / Format ]

(it will ask you for the phones security code, to make sure you are not wiping someoneelses data..].

After formatting (which took about 5 seconds), it told us there was now 980mb of space available on our card..that's better..

We switched the phone off, removed the card, and inserted into a card reader on a PC to inspect what it had done to the card. It was now formatted as a FAT (again), but had inserted a few extra folders on the root. (BACKUP, PICTURES, SOUNDS, VIDEOS). Either way, it all worked fine now.. which is great, but remember not to refill your cards until it has done its formatting (strangley this formatting wasnt necessary on our 128mb when we tried it. We will try to get to the bottom of it in a more detailed study).

Remember that the music player only likes non-VBR MP3's in the current firmware, and also, max bit rate is 128kbps. You can still fit an awful lot of CBR (constant bit rate) tracks in 980mb.. about 20 hours or 300 tracks..

But you do have to store the tracks in the SOUNDS folder (and not in sub-folders below that) for the on-board MP3 player to find them.

All in all, the Sharp GX-30 is fully compatible with MobyMemory MMCs, and you keep your compatibility with the Nokia and Siemens memory standards, as well as SD one.

And what a beautiful phone (the screen is simply stunning - we would love to get some converted video content on there: its video player is on .3GP standard...watch this space).

If only it had an open OS so you could load your own apps (like on symbian and winows smartphone mobiles..).. maybe someday.
