| | | Can any1 help ??
I've noticed that there are now '4GB MMC' & 'MMC+' cards avaliable now (for a while actually), & I have a couple of questions about both.
1) 4GB cards - does 6230i show 'correct' size ?? (I have v3.4 firmware) - I had a 6230, but until I updated the firmware, 1GB cards showed incorrect sizes. If memory serves me right it showed me that the actual card size was ~620Mb for a 1GB card.
2) Are MMC+ cards actually 5x faster while still INSIDE the phone ?? - What I mean is that although cards are 'compatible' with 6230i - is the actual speed 5x faster when it's inside the phone (e.g. when transferring from phone to PC as 'Data Storage' through datacable) - or is the speed only appropriate if you use a compatible card reader (some research I've done shows not all USB 2 card readers may accept MMC plus cards - & I get fed up having to keep upgrading card readers).
I also believe MMC+ cards have a second row of extra contacts, which I guess have something to do with the extra speed (am I right ??) - if so then this may be why older USB 2 card readers don't recognise MMC+ cards & since the 6230i only has 1 row of contacts, I guess it will not recognise the MMC+ card
Any help appreciated & thanx in advance |

| Posted 8/22/2006 10:54 AM | | | Not really the correct place to ask this question (It's a Memory forum - & the subject is about '4GB cards' & 'MMCplus') but thought I'll let you know anyway.
To get your Firmware upgraded, you need to take your phone to a 'Official Nokia Repair Engineer'. He will upgrade the firmware as he has the neccessary equipment/Software etc.
If you want to do it yourself - you need to pay out a lot of money (I did a quick search & found a 'JAF Unlocking/Flashing equipment' box costing £140)
I cannot tell how much it will cost since the last time I had my phone 'flashed' it was a 6230 phone & it was still under warrenty (Just!!). I had a problem with the edge connector (wouldn't work with car kit) & I asked if the firmware could be upgraded at the same time as well, as it wouldn't see 1Mb card correctly in it either.
I had mine done in 'Carphone Warehouse' but not all shops have a 'Nokia repair department' you will have to ask.
Hope this Helps
Edited same day: The nokia webpage has a 'service point locator' page, that will help find your local repair place, based on your postcode. Pop along to:-

I have 1GB in my 6230i at the moment and I really want to upgrade but I'm a little nervous about the 4GB card, though it is listed as compatible. Also don't know if I need to upgrade my reader. Haven't the prices come down? My 1GB card was £55 about a year ago! |
| Posted 2/22/2007 11:50 AM | | | I've just upgraded to a 4GB card, from 2GB, and it's working fine. Read on a forum somewhere, that you need to format the 2GB card in a computer first, not in the phone. I did that, and loaded my music from the pc too, and it worked a treat. I have just done the same with my 4GB card, and no problems. |
| Posted 3/1/2007 9:41 PM | | | | I'm glad your upgrade went smoothly. Mine didn't I just upgraded from 1GB to 4GB but my card isn't showing up in my reader and on my phone shows only 32GB. How can I format it when my PC is saying 'insert a disk'? Did you buy a new card reader? Mine is a USB2.0, I am sure it is the same one that's offered with my new card. I am confused as to where I am going wrong. |
| Posted 3/2/2007 3:26 PM | | | Just a couple of questions
i) What phone are you using (make/model) ii) What version firmware does it have iii) You state you have a USB 2 card reader but are you using it through a USB hub ?? - Does your PC have internal USB 2 or USB 1 plugs ?? iv) Are you using the correct menu to examine the card memory ??
I'll try explain - I had similar problem
- If your phone has an old firmware - this can cause it to not read newer cards correctly, my old 6230 (not 'i') showed a 1Gb wrongly until I had the firmware upgraded at a registered Nokia Repair shop (Carphone warehouse)
- I also had a card reader - it looked the same as Mobymemory one (different manufacturer) BUT I found out it was a USB 1 & didn't recognize a 2GB MMC card. I then brought a new USB multi card reader & it still didn't work. Then realized that my USB powered Hub was only USB 1 so I plugged it directly into ports on the front of my PC & STILL didn't work despite the fact I knew motherboard had USB 2 (it's stated on the box M/B came in) - discovered that my PC actually had mixture of USB 1 & 2, USB 2 were the one's on rear backplate, USB 1 plugs on front plate of case were plugged directly onto motherboard internally. Plugged into rear plug of PC & then card was seen
- Lastly, I discovered that depending on which menu you used on phone to examine card depended on whether it showed 'free' memory or 'used' memory. I posted a reply on the sticky 'Nokia 6230 + 2GB MobyMemory MMC - The pictures..' explaining the photos were wrong
[p.s.] I guess you misspelt the 32GB in your quote & in fact it should've been 32Mb |
