Posted 6/14/2004 5:54 PM | | | The full range of MOBYMEMORY MMC Cards ( From 128mb to 1Gb) ARE COMPATIBLE with the Nokia 6230. Our cards come pre-formatted to work with Nokia 6230 and other mobiles. Due to a limitation in the current Nokia 6230 firmware, please be aware of the following issues: (NB. Some of these limitations are partially addressed by the latest firmware: v4.28. However, formatting is still not supported in this firmware). - DO NOT FORMAT 512MB OR 1GB MMC Cards from the Nokia 6230.
- (ALWAYS USE A MEMORY CARD READER RATHER THAN YOUR Nokia 6230 TO FORMAT BIG MMC CARDS).
NB. Our USB2 card readers can handle 1Gb MMC memory cards but not all card readers can. The current firmware in the Nokia 6230 has a problem formatting MMC cards bigger than 256mb. The formatting issue is a problem with the 6230 firmware, not our memory cards (it is the same for any other brand of memory card. In fact, many other 512mb and 1Gb MMC cards do not work at all in Nokia 6230, due to header incompatibility and higher voltage drain issues). Also the phone may display an incorrect size and space capacity of a big MMC.. commonly it will report the card size of 80mb. This issue has been fixed in v4.28 of the firmware. It has no effect on performance of the card, and does not prevent you using the full space (490mb in 512mb card, or 980mb on 1Gb card) available on the memory card. DO NOT LOCK YOUR MEMORY CARD WITH A PASSWORD ON YOUR 6230. (If you forget it or mis-key, you have rendered your memory card useless, as formatting does not even remove the password). If you use this feature of your 6230, you do so at your own risk. Our 512mb and 1Gb MMC cards work great with the Nokia 6230, BOTH FOR READING AND WRITING FILES. (e.g. for playing music files-aac and mp3- and capturing video, and camera shots etc) and for writing files to the card whilst in the phone and connected with the data cable (or by bluetooth or infra-red). The benefit of a big card in the little 6230 is clear to all, with the amount of music it can hold around 35 hours of music (when set to Nokia Audio Manager defaults : 64kbps AAC) in the 1Gb, and over 16hours in 512mb (equiv to over 20 albums). Check this article for help in making playlists to utilize sub-folders for storing MP3/AAC in big MMC: Making Playlists with Nokia Audio Manager for 6230 NB. Sometimes, people report issues trying to set an MP3 as ringtone on big MMC cards (due scanning of MP3s on a big MMC slowing down the phone when handling a call). The solution to this is to always move the track you want as your current ringtone to phone memory. when you are finished with it, move it back to the MMC memory and swap for a new MP3 track. A memory card reader is pretty much essential purchase with the 512mb or 1Gb MMC (these are available as a discounted option against every MMC card purchase from us, from as low as £10 extra for the 7in1 USB2 reader). A USB2 card reader will transfer your files much more quickly than other connection methods, and is the safest way of formatting your memory card. ps. if someone does format their 512mb or 1Gb card in the Nokia 6230, then all is not lost, you will be able to recover your card with a memory card reader and a PC. (see other posts on this from Wak) Please email us if you want more information or re-assurance. But remember, all MobyMemory cards carry a 5yr manufacturers warranty, and we provide a 14 no-question money-back guarantee (Full refund for whatever reason on return of the card). Yours sincerely,

| Posted 8/27/2004 12:04 PM | | | What a silly billy I am -I Just brought a 1Gb MMC, & didn't read about incompatibily etc On my 6230 it showed incorrectly so I DID format it - and thing went downhill from there. I found this thread & tried to re-format using PC but there's more trouble I cannot format it - whenever I try I get the bar going all the way to 100% but then it just sits there doing nothing - my 'access' light on card reader stays on & no matter what I do to try & stop the formating nothing works - If I cancel Formatting - It stops but then I get 'Drive L: not accessable' (L: is my card reader) Using task manager to 'end process' - it just stays as it is Using the 'safely remove hardware' option in taskbar to stop the 'USB Reader (UISDMC) Device Driver', I get the following 'The Device 'Generic Volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later' The only way to 'stop' it is by shutting down PC or if I pull out the plug to the card reader. I made sure that I selected FAT & not FAT32 etc - I even tried doing the DOS command prompt through windows & that comes up with 'Insert new disk for drive L: and press enter when ready the new file system is FAT verifying 980M 100 percent complete' then it just sits there & no DOS prompt turns up & I cannot shut down the DOS window I am using Windows XP Pro & the card reader is a Carry UISDMC1 6-in-1 Reader Writer, I've tried finding updated drivers for it, but the only one I can find are 'generic v6.8' - is it because it a 1Gb & the card reader doesn't recognise it, or is it that the card reader is possibly a USB 1 ?? I've tried the formatting using a 32Mb & 256Mb card & they work OK - It's just the 1Gb that locks up or freezes at end of format any help appreciated & thanx in advance |

| Posted 4/6/2005 7:01 PM | | | | I have just had my 6230 firmware updated to version 5.26, will this allow the phone to format and read the 512Mb and 1Gb cards? |
| Posted 4/7/2005 4:37 PM | | | Spaced-Man,
I cannot vouch for v5.26 firmware (didn't even know that existed) - but I cannot see Nokia going back on themselves. I upgraded from v3.24 to v5.24 about 2 months ago & have a 1Gb Mobymobile memory card
I copied all files on card first onto computer as a backup using a USB2 card reader (USB1 card reader doesn't recognise the card), & checked the memory card 'size' / 'used' / 'free' on Nokia using:-
Menu > Gallery > Options > Memory Status > Memory card. It showed: Free Memory 787.3 Mb / Used Memory 192.5 Mb
Returned back to Main screen & then used on Nokia 6230:-
Menu > Gallery > '1Gb Card' > Options > Format Mem.Card ('1Gb Card' is the name I gave my card) 'Format Memory Card' - answered 'Yes' 'Delete all Data on Memory Card' - answered 'Yes'
& it formated it (took about 10-20 secs). I then 'checked the memory card' again, & it showed: Free Memory 979.7 Mb / Used Memory 0.0 Mb
I copied a couple of pictures from phone to card - that worked I renamed the card to '1GB MMC' - that worked I copied back files on computer to card using USB 2 card reader - that worked
So the bottom line - I think it safe to say that using 1Gb cards now work fine on Nokia 6230,as long as you have firmware v5.24 or above, & I can't see there being any problem with 512Mb (or less) cards either - I know it definitely didn't work with v3.4 ;-)
I hope this helps you |
| Posted 4/7/2005 6:14 PM | | | Thanks, I'll order a 1 Gb this weekend. Do you happen to know how to get animated wallpapers and video ringtones to work on the 6230? I thnk the phone can handle them. Thanks |
| Posted 4/8/2005 1:52 PM | | | kermit, you are a brave man! thanks for that feedback. other customers, please continue to use USB2 card readers for formatting your bigger memory cards. Nokia do not certify, and we cannot provide warranty on it, for use of the formatting function on the Nokia 6230 for memory cards over 256MB. We will do some more thorough testing, but given the complication of checking firmwares etc, our standard recommendation will always be to insist that customers use a compatible (modern USB2) - ie. one of ours which we can vouch for) card readers when re-formatting. But it is good to know that Nokia is continuing to work on, and add new functionality/capability improvements to the Noka 6230, a phone that has been out now for well over a year. But that is the sort of quality and customer service we have all come to expect from those finnish guys! Yours sincerely,

| Posted 4/8/2005 6:53 PM | | | [Spaced-Man / Webmaster - Glad to be of help & yes I do agree with Webmaster - it's best to be safe using a card reader on larger Memory cards - that's why I backed my files up first in case things went wrong.]
Spaced-Man Can't help much with 'Video-ringtones' - not sure what file format they meant to be - If you mean 'can I use a video as a ringtone?' I don't think you can. Video files are 'mp4' or '3gp' & if you try to search for one of these to use on your phone - you get message 'Requested files not found' - ringtones should be 'MID' or 'AMR' (I think you can use WAV's but I havn't got any on my phone so can't check)
As for 'Animated Wallpaper' - it seems you can use any 'Animated GIF' (not MPG's) however note that using one will 'animate' for only approx 1 min (unless your screensaver kicks in first), then it will become a static frame.
You can either get animated GIF's of the WWW or make your own - I use Paint Shop Pro - but you may find a free GIF ANIMATOR software somewhere on the net
To use them - Just select an Animated GIF instead of a static GIF or JPG picture for your wallpaper. [Menu > Settings >Display settings > Wallpaper > Select wallpaper > browse to the graphic you want to use >Options > Set as wallpaper] |
| Posted 4/8/2005 7:47 PM | | | Hi, I didn't mean to use video's as ring tones, I meant the things like the crazy frog. I have the frog on my phone but under the options on that video there isn't one to set it as a ringtone. I'm thinking that it will only work if I buy the video. At least the animated wallpapers work now, they didn't on firmware version 3.15 Thanks Spaced |
