My new Xmas pressie was a Fujitsu-Siemens Loox 720 Pocket PC PDA.

It is a very nice machine, with full 640x480 resolution screen and a tidy Windows Pocket PC 2003 O/S, and wifi/bluetooth support integrated into it.

There are 2 expansion slots, an SD/MMC slot, and CompactFlash slot.

i have partnered up my Loox with one of our 1GB Kingmax hi-speed SD cards, as i want to keep the CompatchFlash slot free for peripherals like GPS etc.. Our MobyMemory 1GB MMC memory card also works fine in the device, but in this instance i want to make use of the extra speed capacity of the Kingmax Platinum SD range (and so compatibility to more devices as with our MMC cards is not the top-priority here). You can buy this SD card from us here..

Now for a screenshot with 1GB being inserted in the top (hot-swappable slot):

Now we can see the available memory in your Pocket PC..

It works great.

Also, i have recently downloaded the excellent BetaPlayer from http://betaplayer.corecodec.org/ ..

I took a few screenshots with the Trailer tester copies of The Matrix and Fifth Element to give you an idea of what this thing can do in terms of quality playback..

i told you they looked good.

In terms of jerkiness, the processor in the Loox can pretty much handle the movie data stream to avoid any sudden jerkiness, but it is not absolutely seamless, but very close to, and eminently watchable. Remember that this is at full-resolution encoding (640x480), you can take down the quality of conversion encoding (in terms of resolution as well as compression) for smaller file sizes.

i have also heard that the HP hx4700 and Dell X30 perform really well with the BetaPlayer program, and not dropping any frames with the faster CPU (624mhz) at full native reoslution (640x480).

Thus a modern PDA is another option for getting portable movie playback, although a 1GB SD is only going to hold at most a few movies at one time.. And this is where a hi-speed data transfer (via a USB2 card reader is best for up to 10mb/per sec with our Kingmax SD's) is important to get your movies on there as quick as possible.

These PDAs are also great for GPS navigation, remote internet browsing, checking email etc..

I've been using my MobyMemory 512MB MMC which I originally purchased for my Nokia 6230 in my XDAIIs.

Betaplayer is awesome...especially combined with PocketDivX Encoder - I can rip all my favourite tv shows off bit-torrent and then watch them on my XDAIIs with very high quality.

Awesome!
